The Engineering Transfer programs are a pathway into engineering studies at most post-secondary institutions in British Columbia and into the University of Alberta.

In the Engineering programs at most other engineering schools in Canada students take a common set of first year of courses and then chose an engineering discipline when they go into second year. The VIU Engineering programs offer the all courses in theBC Common First-Year Engineering Curriculum. They prepare you to continue your studies at:

  • University of Victoria (UVic)
  • University of British Columbia (UBC)
  • Thompson Rivers University (TRU)
  • Simon Fraser University (SFU
  • University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC)
  • University of Alberta (UofA)

Engineering Transfer Diploma

In the Engineering Transfer Diploma program, you will take 20 courses over two years. When you complete the diploma with a minimum GPA you get guaranteed acceptance into second year at UVic and direct transfer into other universities in BC and into UofA.

For full details, see the Engineering Transfer Diploma program page.

Notes on admission

If you're missing Chemistry 12 we encourage you to apply. Applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis

We recommend:  Calculus 12 (if available); Programming 12 (if available)

Program progression and continuance

To meet the requirements of the CFYEC, students enrolled in VIU’s Engineering Transfer Diploma program are expected to maintain a full course load as described in the program outline. Students must also:

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 for all program courses and a minimum GPA of 2.00 per semester.
  • Successfully complete ENGR 112 in their first term and ENGR 121 in their second term of the Engineering Transfer diploma program.

Students unable to meet these conditions may be required to discontinue from the program.  Students asked to leave the program may:

  • be required to transfer into another academic program like the Bachelor of Science
  • be allowed to take Engineering Transfer Diploma program courses if space is available

On an exceptional basis, and with the permission of the program chair, students may be allowed to reduce their enrolment to four courses per semester.

Upon successfully completing the first full year of the Engineering Transfer Diploma, students will automatically be transferred to the second year of the program.

Transferring into the Engineering Diploma

Students who have more than one transferrable course within the Engineering Transfer Diploma are not normally accepted into the program.  Instead, you should apply to the BSc - General and enroll in any remaining courses within the Engineering Transfer Diploma you still need to take. Please contact the Engineering Transfer Advisor for more details.

Scholarships, awards and bursaries

There are several scholarships available to students in the Engineering Transfer program. For current students, you should ensure that your student profile is up-to-date to be eligible.

After your two years at VIU

You can apply for the Engineering Transfer Diploma in the last term of your studies. If you meet the credentials of the program, they will be granted the credential.

Engineering Transfer Certificate

With the VIU Engineering Transfer Certificate program (ETCP) you complete a set of twelve (12) courses that align with the BC Common First-Year Engineering Curriculum. This is a standard five-course semester, plus two courses, Engineering Chemistry (CHEM 150) and Engineering Mechanics Chemistry (ENGM 141).

Admission

For the Engineering Transfer Certificate you must apply for the Engineering Transfer Diploma.  When you receive an acceptance letter into the diploma program, you will be asked whether you plan to graduate with the certificate or diploma.  If you indicate the certificate, CHEM 150 in the Fall Term (Sept - Dec) and ENGM 141 in Spring Term (Jan - Apr) will be added to your timetable, allowing you to complete all certificate requirements within one year.

Program completion

All students may apply for the Engineering Transfer Certificate in their last term of studies. If they meet the credentials of the program, they will be granted the certificate.

To transfer to UBC, UNBC, UVic, TRU, SFU or the UofA  you must apply formally for admission to your chosen school.

When you complete the Engineering Transfer Certificate you are also eligible to continue in the Engineering Transfer Diploma
